A Successful Future With Early STEM Exposure

A Successful Future With Early STEM Exposure

By contributor Lyan Ware

With our rapidly evolving world becoming increasingly reliant on automation, it’s important to start thinking about the future of the job market. The demand for skilled workers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields is increasing exponentially, so when it comes to planning for the futures of our children, we should consider pivoting away from some of the more traditional career paths, opting to prepare them for emerging industries in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. By providing children with opportunities to engage in STEM learning at an early age, we are creating a future workforce in exciting and lucrative career fields.

According to a Forbes article written by Bernard Marr in December 2022, the increase in automation and the use of AI is going to create many jobs in the future that don’t currently exist. This means that early training in these skills will build children’s competency, opening doors to a world of possibilities, from working at NASA, Tesla, Amazon, or any number of industry big-hitters, to becoming innovative and successful entrepreneurs. Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Apple’s Steve Wozniak, for example, were both exposed to coding at early ages. At just twelve years of age, Elon Musk sold his first video game to a computer magazine. By providing children with the opportunity to learn these skills at an early age, we are giving them the tools they need to thrive in a highly competitive and vacillating job market.

But it’s not just about future job prospects. Studies have linked early coding exposure to an increase in executive function, improvement in response inhibition, and planning. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that children who participated in a LEGO robotics program showed an increase in math and science test scores, as well as improved problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The benefits of early exposure to STEM subjects are clear, and education is trying to move towards implementing coding into elementary school curriculums based on the increasing demand for computer science skills. Early STEM exposure can also help to bridge the gender and diversity gaps in these fields. By providing equal opportunities for all children to learn these skills, we can propagate diversity and create a more inclusive workforce that is better equipped to solve the complex challenges of the future.

There’s no need to wait in order to secure your child’s standing in a future STEM career. During Intellectual Point’s Cyber Warrior STEM Camps, we offer up to seven different STEM workshops where students can gain early hands-on experience working with programming and building robots from the comfort of their own home by providing live instruction in a virtual environment. Bonus: they even get to keep the robot that they build!
